Engines Worldwide, Search Engine Colossus, Search Engine Guide, Foreign Language Internet Search Engines, Metaplus World Search, and Search Engines Worldwide are excellent global master directories of local search engines for regional, country, or language-specific searches. Yahoo! provides country-specific and regional topical searches, official government site searches, travel searches, and news coverage (use "Search Full Coverage") by country. Google offers a comprehensive Language Tools Page to search in specific languages or countries, translate text, change Google's language interfaces, or link to country-specific Google sites.

Abya Yala Net-- Information on indigenous peoples in Mexico, Central, and South America.

AmericasNet-- Information on the hemispheric integration process, especially the Summits of the Americas and the Free Trade Area of the Americas.

Americas.org-- From the Resource Center of the Americas, with content oriented toward justice, democracy, and human rights issues in Latin America.

Americas Program-- From the Interhemispheric Resource Center,  a progressive "nonprofit policy studies center whose overarching goal is to help forge a new global affairs agenda for the U.S. government and people--one that makes the United States a more responsible global leader and partner." Articles, commentaries, and reports on Latin American issues are posted online.

Andanzas al Web Latino-- New Mexico State University Library provides many well-annotated sources in various languages, a first-rate site for the purpose.

Andean Community-- In English and Spanish, information on the economic and social integration process among Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

Border and Latin American Information-- Another first-class site from New Mexico State University Library, especially good on U.S.-Mexican border issues.

Borderlands Encyclopedia-- From the University of Texas at El Paso, a full set of resources on current U.S.-Mexican border issues.

Council on Foreign Relations' Latin America Studies Program-- Called "The Internet Portal to Latin America: Issues and Resources," this fine site features a lot of information on the Program, its publications (some online), and Latin American countries and issues. Good links to country information.

Development Statistics: Latin America--  From the United States Agency for International Development, a compilation of socioeconomic data on these countries.

Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean-- News, information, many statistics, and many online reports are available free in full-text from this United Nations regional organization. Great source for authoritative online economic information about Latin America.

Free Trade Area of the Americas-- "Official home page of the Free Trade Area of the Americas process or FTAA. This site follows the process initiated in the 1994 Summit of the Americas to integrate the economies of the Western Hemisphere into a single free trade arrangement."

Handbook of Latin American Studies-- From the Hispanic Division of the United States Library of Congress, this is an annual multidisciplinary bibliography on Latin America, consisting of works selected and annotated by scholars. It is now online as a thoroughly searchable database, from Volume 1 (1935) to date. An excellent resource.

Hispanic Reading Room-- This section of the U. S. Library of Congress serves as the primary access point for research relating to those parts of the world encompassing the geographical areas of the Caribbean, Latin America, and Iberia; the indigenous cultures of those areas; and peoples throughout the world historically influenced by Luso-Hispanic heritage, including Latinos in the U.S., and peoples of Portuguese or Spanish heritage in Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

Institute of the Americas-- Independent, non-profit research organization on Latin American and Hemispheric issues, with publications online, from the University of California at San Diego.

Instituto Internacional de Gobernabilidad-- In Spanish, from Barcelona, by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, and the Escuela Superior de Administración y Dirección de Empresas, a fine site dedicated to analysis of state reform, governability, and development in Latin America. Excellent publications online, including Instituciones y Desarrollo magazine, plus Governance discussion list.

    Databases--Foreign trade statistics, economic integration treaties, and bibliographies for Latin American countries.
    Research Department-- Note especially their Publications, with many high quality studies online. Check out the newsletter Latin American Economic Policies, and the excellent annual survey Economic and Social Progress in Latin America.
    Sustainable Development Department-- Excellent full-text publications in many related areas.

Inter-American Dialogue-- A major U.S. center for policy analysis, communication, and exchange on U.S.-Latin American issues. Publications online.

Inter-American Press Association-- Prestigious "non-profit organization dedicated to defending freedom of expression and of the press throughout the Americas." Reports, press releases, and news on press freedom in the countries of the Western Hemisphere and related information. Also has a directory for online access to well over 1000 newspapers in the Americas.

Internet Resources for Latin America-- Another excellent compilation of  annotated links from the New Mexico State University Library.

Latin America Data Base-- The Latin America Data Base at the University of New Mexico is an on-line publisher and information resource. LADB produces three weekly electronic publications (Sourcemex, EcoCentral and NotiSur) and maintains an on-line searchable data base of over 24,000 articles (from back issues of LADB publications) as well as Latin American journals. Publications are available by subscription.

Latin America Research Group, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta--  Staff papers, economic analyses, and speeches online, plus links on Latin American macroeconomic and financial topics.

Latin America Special Report-- From FinanceWise, regional and country economics and finance links, detailed information on several countries from the Emerging Markets Investor Fact Book, currency spot rates, and a review of regional newsgroups and discussion forums.

Latin America Working Group-- "Coalition of over sixty [U.S.] religious, human rights, policy, grassroots and development organizations... striving for U.S. policies that promote peace, justice and sustainable development in the region." Online news, policy analysis reports, and general studies.

Latin American Development Archive-- At Johns Hopkins University, this site posts data sets and other information useful to those doing research on Latin American development. These materials may be copied freely for scholarly research and educational purposes.

Latin American Economic System (SELA)-- Regional, economic integration-focused IGO, with searchable reports, bulletins, articles, database, and other publications online, mainly in Spanish.

Latin American Network Information Center-- The University of Texas at Austin maintains one of the major sites in the world for Latin American information, searchable and organized by country, subject, region, and LANIC projects and hosted databases. Serves as the WWW Virtual Library of Latin American Studies. Note the newspapers and  journals & magazines sections.

Latin American Outlook-- Periodic publications on Latin American issues, from the American Enterprise Institute.

Latin American Studies Association--  LASA is the largest professional association in the world for individuals and institutions engaged in the study of Latin America, and offers downloadable online text of hundreds of papers from its most recent International Congresses. Note the LASA Section on Brazil and the Section on Ecuadorian Studies.

Latin Business Chronicle-- Comprehensive source for business, economy and technology news and trends, with special reports, commentaries, columns, country profiles, data, resources, and reviews.

Latin-Focus --  Latest available data and news on Latin America "from government sources, economic forecasts, market analysis covering economic performance, political risk assessments and financial market developments."

Latin World-- A directory of Internet resources on Latin America and the Caribbean, with a magazine, links to radio stations and an extensive virtual newstand.

Latinvestor-- Financial directory, with country reports, economic weeklies and monthlies, industry reports, financial information, and general or business news, online or linked, at a site maintained by a former Latin American equity analyst at ING Barings. Fine site for business and government links.

MERCOSUR-Network Information Site-- From a network of research institutions in the four MERCOSUR full member countries, in cooperation with the International Development Research Centre and the Organization of American States, a directory of general and detailed commercial information, news, and leads on many aspects of MERCOSUR.

Miami Herald Americas Section-- Latin American news and features in English from the Miami Herald, one of the U.S. papers that most covers Latin America.

North American Institute-- A trinational public affairs organization that studies the emerging North American regional space and the development of a continental community. Information is given on trade and the environment, institutional developments, and the social-cultural roots of identities.

NuevaMayoría-- In English and Spanish, "The Socio-Political Gate to Latin America," with news, commentary, analysis, research-- free and for-fee content, from the Argentine think tank Centro de Estudios Nueva Mayoría.

Organization of American States-- The principal international organization of the Western Hemisphere. Extensive resources are found in the Foreign Trade Information System, with information, statistics, and documents about hemispheric integration, trade trends in the Western Hemisphere, and links to further data.

Political Database of the Americas-- This large searchable database at Georgetown University provides documentary and statistical political information on Latin America, including constitutions, electoral laws, parties, legislative, judicial, and executive branch information, public opinion, and election data.

Social Science Research Network-- The Latin American Network of this organization publishes online many excellent and searchable scholarly research papers on Latin American business and economics topics.

Washington Office on Latin America-- A leading advocate for human rights, democracy, and social and economic justice in Latin America and the Caribbean. Resources include U.S. legislation, country/regional, and key issue categories, with online publications.

World Bank Latin American and Caribbean Information-- Many full-text papers, discussion notes, and reports on economic, environmental, and social issues in Latin America and the Caribbean today.

Zona Latina: The Latin American Media Site-- Covers all types of media and advertising in Latin America, with research data, photographs, event schedules, directories, book reviews, and numerous links to Latin American media resources.
