1. Team Work, Working in Consulting Teams

The new cinfoRoster mailing written by Brigitte Späth focussed on team work. In recent years teams and team work have become rather fashionable. Obviously quite some expectations are linked to the concept of teams in international development. Consultant teams are frequently assigned to appraise, assess, review and evaluate projects and programmes. The outstanding difference to a "normal" team in any company or organisation is probably the international or intercultural context of the work. 2. European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR)

The EIDHR has published various calls for proposals for macro and micro projects. Approximately 100m€ is available annually under Chapter B7-7 of the budget to support human rights, democratisation and conflict prevention activities to be carried out primarily in partnership with NGOs and international organisations. The partners eligible for financing are regional and international organisations, non-governmental organisations, national, regional and local authorities and official agencies, community-based organisations and public or private-sector institutes and operators.

3. INTI - European Integration of third country nationals

INTI is a European Union funding programme for pilot projects promoting the integration in the EU member states of people who are not citizens of the EU. Its aim is also to promote dialogue with civil society, develop integration models, seek out and evaluate best practices in the integration field and set up networks at European level. It amounts to 4.000.000 for 2003. INTI encourages co-operation between member states and the creation of transnational partnerships and networks. Download the Call for Proposals 2003 from:

4. World Investment Report 2003 on international agreement issues

The latest World Investment Report by UNCTAD addresses host country policies and measures that are particularly important for attracting FDI. The report also focuses on key issues that straddle national FDI policies and international investment agreements, highlighting their relevance and importance for development. In addition, the report will document and discuss the reasons for the decline in FDI flows in 2002 and will present forecasts for 2003.

5. ITrain Network for creation and support of effective Internet training

ITrain is a collaborative system for creating manuals for computer and Internet training in developing countries. The manuals and course materials can be adapted by the instructor to suit the local context. The training method is participatory; instructor and students learn by doing, in a cooperative setting that emphasises empowerment. The method includes tips on participatory training styles and gender and cultural awareness in computer and Internet training.

6. Customized you Statistics with Nation Master

The Nation Master Web site is an excellent source of national statistics for nearly every country in the world. It offers over 300 data sets on topics such as population, the economy, the environment, crime, media, and military expenditures. It also contains a profile of each country, with statistics, maps, and flags. Users can create their own graphs to compare countries, and the site is searchable. A great tool for consultants, researchers and academics who constantly need this kind of data.

7. Euroguide gateway to European Union information

Developed by a group of libraries, Euroguide is a gateway to Web sites which contain information about the European Union. It's been around for awhile, but it's been updated so that you can now browse 60 subject categories (everything from Acronyms to Youth). When you do a search on Euroguide, the links take you to specific pages within sites, instead of just the home page, so you find the information you need as fast as possible.

8. ECOWAS launches Business Directory

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has released the ECOWAS International Business Directory (EIBD). The aim of the directory is to bring together business entrepreneurs in West Africa to interact among themselves and to become aware of each other's products.

9. Entrepreneurship and Local Economic Development

Programme and Policy Recommendations. Book by OECD 2003. The striking number of entrepreneurship and microenterprise programs reflects the belief that the creation of new firms will combat economic distress in communities. This book examines the relationship between firm creation and local economic development, in particular the particular routes through which enterprise creation and development can impact local economies. It also sets out detailed policy recommendations regarding strategy, finance, and program design to operate at both national and local levels of government.

11. Most eGovernment-for-Development Projects Fail

How Can Risks be Reduced? by Richard Heeks, iGovernment Working Paper No.15 eGovernment can make a valuable contribution to development. However, at present, the majority of e-government-for-development projects fail either totally or partially. This paper explains the underlying cause of failure: the oversize gaps between project design and on-the-ground reality (known as 'design-reality gaps'). The dimensions of these gaps are identified, as are archetypal situations in which failure is likely to occur. The paper then provides a step-by-step guide to identifying and addressing failure risks for e-government projects. It concludes with a real-world case study of using the design-reality gap approach to reduce risks in an e-government project. The paper is available at:
