1. World Bank: Global Economic Prospects 2004

(World Bank) Realising the Development Promise of the Doha Agenda. The report Global Economic Prospects 2004: Realizing the Development Promise of the Doha Agenda presents a detailed overview of the world economy, and the near-term outlook. It also offers a rigorous analysis of global trade issues, particularly those that head the agenda for discussion at the WTO meeting last month. A trade deal that addresses the concerns of developing nations could spur global growth and reduce poverty by as much as 144 million people by 2015, according to this World Bank report. This report presents a detailed overview of the world economy, and the near-term outlook. It also analyses central elements of the Doha Agenda that are important to developing countries negotiations on the Doha Development Agenda. Available online at:

3. MIGA Publishes FDI Benchmarking Study on Asia

MIGA -- http://www.miga.org -- has benchmarked for the first time the FDI competitiveness of six countries in Asia (China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) in two industries, electronics manufacturing and shared services. The resulting report, titled Benchmarking FDI Competitiveness in Asia provides a critical view of each country's business environment through the lens of potential investors.

5. FEMISE 2003 Annual Report on the Web

(EuroMed) The 2003 edition of the Annual Report issued by the MEDA supported Euro-Mediterranean Forum of Economic Institutes (FEMISE) is now available in French on the Forum's web site. The English version will soon be published on the same site. The 166 page report comprises two parts. In the first part six regional guidelines for development are presented (satisfying the need for jobs; consolidating macro-economic stability; making for more buoyant growth; strengthening competitiveness in trade in goods and services, as well as the attractiveness of capital; making the labour market more dynamic; and controlling poverty). The second part is made up of 12 chapters outlining the Mediterranean Partners' macro-economic situation.

6. Good Start for Network of Investment Promotion Agencies (ANIMA)

(EuroMed) The MEDA funded Euro-Mediterranean Network of Investment Promotion Agencies (ANIMA) held its 2nd conference from 22 to 24 October in Marseilles, France to take stock of results achieved within the first phase of the project. Participants noted the remarkable co-operation spirit between representatives of all Mediterranean Partners, and the excellent work done on networking, notably the web site and newsletter. Phase 1 of ANIMA included capacity building operations, conferences, a study trip, and business events. ANIMA is part of the Regional Industrial Co-operation Programme.

7. Global Land Cover: unique picture of world vegetation from satellites

(EuropeAid) A unique global land cover database for the year 2000 (GLC2000) is at last ready for use. This map fills an important knowledge gap concerning the distribution of vegetation and land cover on our planet. It was completed by a world-wide partnership of over 30 research organisations, co-ordinated by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC). GLC2000 results will help forecast and prevent natural and man-made disasters, and study eco-systems, bio-diversity, climate change and weather forecasting.
