United for a Just Transition: Karsten Weitzenegger and the Society for International Development

Development work is as much about ideas and networks as it is about projects. Karsten Weitzenegger is a member of the Society for International Development (SID), one of the oldest and most respected global networks of development professionals, thinkers, and advocates working toward a more equitable and sustainable world.

What is SID?

Founded in 1957, SID is an international network of individuals and organisations dedicated to promoting socioeconomic justice and strengthening democratic participation in development processes. With approximately 3,000 members and active chapters and institutional partners in more than 50 countries, SID operates at national, regional, and global levels. Its international secretariat is based in Rome, with a second office in Nairobi.

SID has been at the forefront of international policy dialogues for decades, serving as an incubator for innovative development concepts on themes ranging from environment and energy justice to women in development, human rights, and sustainable livelihoods. Its flagship publication, the DEVELOPMENT Journal (published by Palgrave Macmillan), has appeared continuously since 1957 and reaches a broad readership across the global development community.

SID’s current work is anchored in five core pillars:

  • Human rights as a cornerstone of democratic governance at all levels
  • Multidimensional inequalities as a framework for assessing development challenges
  • Socioeconomic transformation at micro, meso, and macro levels as the path to equity
  • Food sovereignty and agroecology as guiding paradigms for sustainable food systems
  • Democratisation of global economic governance to remove structural barriers to change

SID in Germany and Hamburg

The SID Chapter Deutschland connects German-speaking development professionals and advocates, convening dialogues on global development financing, climate policy, and civil society engagement . Events like the regular Entwicklungspolitisches Fachgespräch (Development Policy Expert Dialogue) offer a forum for rigorous debate among practitioners, academics, and policymakers .

The SID Hamburg Chapter provides a local home for this global conversation right in Germany’s gateway to the world. Hamburg’s role as a hub of international trade, logistics, and sustainability makes it a natural base for development policy debates with a global outlook.
