Taking Action for a Just and Sustainable World: Karsten Weitzenegger and #ACTION4SD

Advocacy and expertise belong together. Since December 2016, Karsten Weitzenegger has been an active supporter of Action for Sustainable Development (#ACTION4SD)  — a global civil society platform driving progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

What is Action for Sustainable Development?

Action for Sustainable Development is a global civil society platform that brings together organisations and individuals to support the delivery of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. With over 3,000 members worldwide (80% of them based in the Global South) it is one of the most geographically diverse advocacy networks in the sustainable development space.

The platform was built by four major global civil society networks: CIVICUS (the world alliance for citizen participation, active in 170+ countries), Climate Action Network International (CAN) (with 950+ NGOs in over 110 countries), Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) (with national coalitions in 85 countries), and the International Forum of National NGO Platforms (IFP/FIP) (representing 64 national NGO platforms across 5 continents). Together, they created a platform broad enough to reflect the full complexity of the sustainability challenge.

What Does ACTION4SD Do?

The platform pursues four interconnected goals:[2]

  • Providing an accessible online space to share information on Agenda 2030 and Paris Agreement commitments and implementation worldwide
  • Supporting advocacy and public participation in the 2030 Agenda at national, regional, and global levels
  • Sharing innovative approaches, knowledge, and good practices among professionals, experts, and activists
  • Mobilising civil society voices to hold governments accountable for the promises they have made to people and the planet

ACTION4SD has been a key partner of the Global Week of Action since 2018 and regularly convenes webinars, joint advocacy campaigns, and shared policy positions on climate, poverty, and governance.

Karsten Weitzenegger’s Commitment

Karsten Weitzenegger joined ACTION4SD in December 2016, when the platform was newly established to translate the ambitions of the 2030 Agenda into concrete civil society action. His support reflects a conviction that runs through all of his consulting work: that development justice, environmental sustainability, and social equity are not separate goals but deeply interlinked challenges requiring coordinated, evidence-based advocacy.

As a policy adviser and evaluator working across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, Karsten connects the platform’s global agenda to the day-to-day realities of project implementation and governance reform.

Why You Should Join

ACTION4SD is open to individuals and organisations who share the vision of a world where social, environmental, and development justice is assured for all. Joining means:

  • Becoming part of a 3,000-strong global community of activists, CSOs, researchers, and practitioners
  • Accessing shared resources, toolkits, and reports on SDG implementation, climate action, and civil society engagement
  • Amplifying your voice in global advocacy processes, including UN High-Level Political Forum dialogues and climate negotiations
  • Connecting with regional and national networks that translate global goals into local action
  • Contributing to a movement that is urgent, inclusive, and genuinely global

The world does not need more bystanders. It needs more people who act.
